Healthy tips for surviving holiday parties

Healthy tips for surviving holiday parties As the holidays are approaching, you may know that statistics say Americans gain an average of 5-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've seen that get better over the years, but, even so, it's important to have a plan and to be mindful of your habits. Here are a few healthy tips for surviving holiday parties: Do not skip your exercise or workout routines. If anything, add an extra workout each week. Commit to classes and sign up for them to help you to be accountable. Did you ever notice that when you are exercising consistently, you are less likely to eat unhealthy foods? Bring a healthy entree so you know you are at least guaranteed one healthy food for the meal. Be creative, even a lot of desserts now are low carb and low sugar and just as tasty. Eat a healthy meal with protein BEFORE going to a party. Or, you can have a protein shake before you go. Definitely, don’t show up starving or you will eat all of the snacks before the real food is even ready. Drinks matter. Be smart about your alcohol intake. Drinks are empty calories and we can sometimes forget that.  Your filters to eat healthy at a party slip with alcohol intake. If you are going to have drinks - drink 16 oz water before and after a drink. This keeps you hydrated and will also satiate your hunger for treats or unhealthy food. Don’t hang out in the kitchen! That’s where the good smells and food are literally in your face. So, go sit on the couch and catch up with family and friends. You are more likely to [...]

What does it mean to have dampness in my body?

What is dampness in the body? Have you had a licensed acupuncturist tell you that you have dampness in your body? Or, did they tell you that you have a damp Spleen? What does that mean? Essentially this means that you are experiencing a decline of Spleen function.   We look at Spleen function when discussing dampness. Spleen functions: Regulation of water retention and excretion. When your Spleen is not doing this,  it leads you to have to an accumulation of fluids in the body. Digests and absorbs nutrients. Without this function, you may experience weak muscles, fatigue, etc. Supplies blood to skeletal muscles. Filters blood working for the immune system. Works as a vascular organ and lymphatic system.   External factors: Damp weather, rain, and humidity all can cause dampness in the body. Many areas and cultures experience this type of weather and we tend to see more health conditions in these areas.   Internal factors: You can have a decline in Spleen function due to: Diet: Excessive amounts of certain foods: dairy, raw foods, cold foods, alcohol. Lack of physical activity slows down digestion which means dampness and fluid accumulate in your body.   Symptoms of Spleen Dampness: phlegmy, clammy, sluggish, swollen, groggy, or cold Fatigue, low energy Loose stools Body heaviness Lack of muscle strength Lack of appetite weight gain Bloating phlegmy lungs yeast infections joint inflammation cystic acne sinus infections   Healing dampness: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment of acupuncture and herbs will get you back to a healthy homeostasis. Eat lightly steamed vegetables, sweet potatoes, dates, pork, rice congee, soups, stews, kimchi, and, drink goat’s milk instead of cow’s milk. Take more time to exercise. Live with the goal of [...]

How is screen time affecting you and your health?

Screen time affects our health Screen time is impacting our health We all know that screen time is a buzz word and really a huge concern across all age groups. As I work with parents and teachers, I hear that kids are having issues focusing in school, getting things finished, and they can't stay on task. Sometimes, they are appearing to be more aggressive. This is no coincidence that screen time has gone up drastically in our lives as well as our children's lives. There is a ton of preliminary research out there that is supporting the theories that screen time is bad for us. I barely typed in screen time and got dozens of research articles supporting these theories. We are not heading in the right direction regarding our health both physically and emotionally, because of all of our distractions. The common side effects noted for too much screen time - which adults average checking their phones 80 times each day, 80 TIMES...kids are on screens an average of seven hours each day. SEVEN HOURS. Aggression, lack of focus...can you imagine being a teacher these days? Some of you are, and, I thank you for that. There is also a lot of data that is linking depression, anxiety, and obesity to our sedentary lifestyles. Here's the deal. We have the time to do more fun things - once we get off our phones. What can we do? There are a number of apps that track your time on your phone and will cut you off after a certain amount of time. That's a start. (Here's an article that discusses a few of the apps.) But, I took the plunge and order a new Light [...]

Meditation benefits our brains and has many health benefits

Meditation Benefits Meditation benefits our brains and has many health benefits. We're all hearing this. Something really struck me as our society and, apparently, other societies, seem to be having FOMO. Most of us know what that is because we are way in touch on social media channels. It's the "fear of missing out." And, it's almost an addictive feeling and that's why we can't unplug. But, a friend said to me, "how about trying JOMO instead?" What?! Ahh! JOMO is a total game changer. It stands for "Joy Of Missing Out." Ahh. I know, right?! Does any of this resonate with you? Are you having the daily struggle to unplug, get quiet, and allow yourself to "just be"? I get it. I truly do. So, let's get back to meditation because that's a huge strength and meditation benefit. Meditation allows us to just be and to not care if we are supposedly missing out. It helps us to quiet our minds and let go of daily stressors and simply helps us to reconnect with or inner selves. Meditation Research There are many more meditation benefits and a number are backed by current research. Meditation helps people to decrease their pain, sleep better, reduce anxiety. The list goes on and on. "Some research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors," according to NIH research. "A small 2016 study funded in part by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) found that mindfulness meditation does help to control pain and doesn’t use the brain’s naturally occurring opiates to do so. This suggests that combining mindfulness with pain medications [...]

Diarrhea and Constipation Can Be Helped with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

It is a fact that Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture Successfully Treat Pediatric Diarrhea and Constipation. We see many children in our acupuncture practice and they respond very well to acupuncture and Chinese Herb treatments. At first, our licensed acupuncturists will take a medical history as part of the new patient acupuncture intake visit. Then, we look at the child's face, tongue, take pulses, and diagnose the traditional Chinese medical pattern that is causing diarrhea or constipation. We may offer acupuncture, or, there are other techniques such as cupping or moxa, depending upon the child, diagnosis, and comfort level. What causes Pediatric Diarrhea and Constipation? Dehydration - not drinking enough water. Irregular eating and sleeping patterns. Low protein intake. Structural issues. Not enough exercise or movement. Eating too much raw food - especially fruits. Eating too many carbs. According to Chinese medicine, we look at how much heat or cold is in a child's body, we consider their fluid intake, look at their movement, how much dampness they have in their bodies which causes sluggish digestion. Do you ever notice if your child lays around eating carb snacks and then has a hard time going to the bathroom that day, or, maybe even gets a bellyache? We suggest keeping a food and activity diary to help track which food may be triggering your child's discomfort. Home Care for Diarrhea and Constipation drink regular water throughout the day. Avoid too many fruits and juices. Get regular movement and exercise throughout the day. Limit long spans of sitting and being inactive. Eat steam vegetables and get a small amount of protein at each meal or snack time. Massage your child's abdominal area with light pressure - clockwise for constipation, counterclockwise [...]

Acupuncture for Cancer Support

Acupuncture for Cancer Support Acupuncture is a great tool for treating pain conditions of all kinds. Did you know acupuncture also alleviates cancer pains caused by actual cancer and western medications? What many people don’t know is that acupuncture can treat a lot more than pain. One of the things acupuncture is great at treating are the side-effects from cancer treatments.  Side Effects of Western Cancer Treatment Dry mouth, fatigue, pain, night sweating, nausea, hot flashes, skin sensitivity, nerve pain, joint pain - all of these are common symptoms of radiation and chemotherapy. And, all of them can be successfully treated with acupuncture. Many major hospitals, such as Memorial Sloan Kettering and Cleveland Clinic, offer inpatient acupuncture for cancer support to help with these side effects. The acupuncture treatments also help patients tolerate treatment, thus resulting in better outcomes. Acupuncture and nutritional support can also help with restless sleeping, anxiety, depression, and stimulating appetite, all further helping cancer treatment to be tolerated. This makes acupuncture for cancer support a great tool in your or your loved ones health treatment plans. Acupuncture treats the whole person, mind, and body. It is a safe therapy that many people centers use to support patients with cancer. Acupuncture for cancer support is a complementary treatment alongside your western protocol.
