Healthy tips for surviving holiday parties As the holidays are approaching, you may know that statistics say Americans gain an average of 5-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've seen that get better over the years, but, even so, it's important to have a plan and to be mindful of your habits. Here are a few healthy tips for surviving holiday parties: Do not skip your exercise or workout routines. If anything, add an extra workout each week. Commit to classes and sign up for them to help you to be accountable. Did you ever notice that when you are exercising consistently, you are less likely to eat unhealthy foods? Bring a healthy entree so you know you are at least guaranteed one healthy food for the meal. Be creative, even a lot of desserts now are low carb and low sugar and just as tasty. Eat a healthy meal with protein BEFORE going to a party. Or, you can have a protein shake before you go. Definitely, don’t show up starving or you will eat all of the snacks before the real food is even ready. Drinks matter. Be smart about your alcohol intake. Drinks are empty calories and we can sometimes forget that.  Your filters to eat healthy at a party slip with alcohol intake. If you are going to have drinks - drink 16 oz water before and after a drink. This keeps you hydrated and will also satiate your hunger for treats or unhealthy food. Don’t hang out in the kitchen! What is dampness in the body? Have you had a licensed acupuncturist tell you that you have dampness in your body? Or, did they tell you that you have a damp Spleen? What does that mean? Essentially this means that you are experiencing a decline of Spleen function.   We look at Spleen function when discussing dampness. Spleen functions: Regulation of water retention and excretion. When your Spleen is not doing this,  it leads you to have to an accumulation of fluids in the body. Digests and absorbs nutrients. Without this function, you may experience weak muscles, fatigue, etc. Supplies blood to skeletal muscles. Filters blood working for the immune system. Works as a vascular organ and lymphatic system.   External factors: Damp weather, rain, and humidity all can cause dampness in the body. Many areas and cultures experience this type of weather and we tend to see more health conditions in these areas.   Internal factors: You can have a decline in Spleen function due to: Diet: Excessive amounts of certain foods: dairy, raw foods, cold foods, alcohol. Screen time affects our health Screen time is impacting our health We all know that screen time is a buzz word and really a huge concern across all age groups. As I work with parents and teachers, I hear that kids are having issues focusing in school, getting things finished, and they can't stay on task. Sometimes, they are appearing to be more aggressive. This is no coincidence that screen time has gone up drastically in our lives as well as our children's lives. There is a ton of preliminary research out there that is supporting the theories that screen time is bad for us. I barely typed in screen time and got dozens of research articles supporting these theories. We are not heading in the right direction regarding our health both physically and emotionally, because of all of our distractions. The common side effects noted for too much screen time - which adults average checking their phones 80 times each day, 80 are on screens an average of seven hours each day. SEVEN HOURS. Meditation Benefits Meditation benefits our brains and has many health benefits. We're all hearing this. Something really struck me as our society and, apparently, other societies, seem to be having FOMO. Most of us know what that is because we are way in touch on social media channels. It's the "fear of missing out." And, it's almost an addictive feeling and that's why we can't unplug. But, a friend said to me, "how about trying JOMO instead?" What?! Ahh! JOMO is a total game changer. It stands for "Joy Of Missing Out." Ahh. I know, right?! Does any of this resonate with you? Are you having the daily struggle to unplug, get quiet, and allow yourself to "just be"? I get it. I truly do. So, let's get back to meditation because that's a huge strength and meditation benefit. It is a fact that Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture Successfully Treat Pediatric Diarrhea and Constipation. We see many children in our acupuncture practice and they respond very well to acupuncture and Chinese Herb treatments. At first, our licensed acupuncturists will take a medical history as part of the new patient acupuncture intake visit. Then, we look at the child's face, tongue, take pulses, and diagnose the traditional Chinese medical pattern that is causing diarrhea or constipation. We may offer acupuncture, or, there are other techniques such as cupping or moxa, depending upon the child, diagnosis, and comfort level. What causes Pediatric Diarrhea and Constipation? Cold and Flu Season The Cold and Flu Season is just around the corner - are you ready? The cold and flu season shows up quickly in Colorado. The kids are back to school, sharing germs, coworkers are still traveling and picking up germs, and the weather is cooling off which can be tricky to plan for, especially in Colorado. There is no need to fear the cold and flu season. As long as you are prepared to go into the cold and flu season feeling strong, you have a better chance of not getting sick. And, if you do get sick, it won't last that long as long as you prepared for it. What are some things you can do to boost your immune system during cold and flu season? Sleep - our bodies need more sleep in the winter. Give yourself adequate rest time as well. If you normally sleep 7-8 hours each night, try to add another 1-2 hours during the winter. Yes, seriously:) Exercise - even though it's colder outside, it's important to keep your circulation moving and to keep your stress level in check. Fresh air is key as well as getting cardio. If you absolutely cannot stand exercising outside, then, go to a gym. But, beware of gym equipment and germs. Wash your hands a lot. Drink ginger tea.
